FAQ

HOW DOES A SEPTIC TANK WORK?

The wastewater from the house enters the system for breakdown. The tank contents settle and the heavy solids(sludge) sink to the bottom, the lighter waste forms a scum layer on top with the clarified water in the middle. The water then flows slowly to a second chamber, where it eventually makes its way into the leach field. Here the wastewater disperses through perforated pipes and a gravel layer to the soil. Percolating through the soil, organisms complete the breakdown process and this now clean water re-enters the groundwater system.

WHY SHOULD I EMPTY MY SEPTIC TANK?

Sludge levels build up through the normal operation of the tank. If the level gets very high there is a danger that it may get into the percolation area and stop it from working safely. Sludge can also cause blockages in the distribution box or pipes that discharge the water in the leach field. Repairs/ replacements following damage may be expensive, disruptive and cause additional costs e.g. landscaping gardens.

There is a high risk of pollution from septic tanks that are not properly maintained. This poses a serious threat to health and the environment. If you are concerned or unsure whether your tank needs emptying, give us a call and we can advise or arrange a free tank inspection, to put your mind at rest.

HOW OFTEN SHOULD I EMPTY MY SEPTIC TANK?

EPA guidelines recommend that a septic tank is emptied every year. Several factors impact on how often your tank needs desludging including, tank capacity, water usage and size of household. Regular maintenance will prolong the life of your septic tank and ensure that it works safely and effectively for many years to come.
